Financial Planning Tools

Whether you think your life is all planned out or you're anticipating a career change, having some financial planning tools can be very beneficial towards helping you to reach your goals. With the correct financial planning tools, you can determine your short-term goals as well as long-term goals. What are financial planning tools and how can they help you?

Creating a Budget

One of the most important financial planning tools you can use a budget. By creating budget, you'll always know where you stand financially and what it takes to get where you want to be. Creating a budget is especially helpful if you're in the process of career changing or plan a career change in the near future. Do you know how to create an effective budget? Here are some simple to follow tips to get you started.

  • Get together every type of financial statement you have in your name. Financial statements will include every type of income and every type of expense (utility bills, bank statements, investment accounts, etc.) The more financial information you can dig up, the more accurate your budget is going to be. Determine a starting date for the income and the expenses. If you use the first of the year as you're starting date, you'll also have everything you need when the next tax time rolls around.
  • Keep track of every source of income you have. Whether you are self-employed or receive a paycheck, make sure you record the take-home amount each month.
  • Keep track of all your expenses including utility bills, mortgage, insurances, food plus any expenses you think you may incur during the month.
  • Divide your expenses into two groups: fixed or variable. Fixed expenses are the expenses that are the same every month like mortgage, car payments, internet, telephone, etc. Variable expenses are those that change from month to month such as groceries, fuel, gifts, entertainment, etc.
  • Tally up your monthly expenses and your monthly income. If the income is higher than the expenses, there is hope for you. The excess amount is money that can be put in a college fund, savings account or can be used to help pay off those credit card bills a little quicker. If you're expenses are higher than your income, you have some work cut out for you such as determining where adjustments can be made.
  • Determine which expenses can be decreased or eliminated altogether. Expenses such as eating out can be reduced by eating in less expensive establishments or eating out less frequently. If you're going to a lot of movies, you may want to consider renting movies and watching them out. You can also check out Pay-per-view movies.

Keep track of your budget every month to see how it's working for you and your family. If you see adjustments need to be made, make them as soon as possible. If you've been thinking of finding a different career so you can make more money, you may want to consider a career change coach for guidance and assistance in job hunting and finding a career to meet your financial needs.
