Taking a Career Assessment Test
   – Things You Should Know

Taking a career assessment test can be a lot of fun as well as being a learning experience. When you think of career assessment tests, you probably have flashbacks of taking them in high school, sitting in a chair for hours filling in a succession of little dots. Career assessment tests are completely different today, especially when they're interactive fun tests you can take online.

The Process of a Career Assessment Test

The process of taking a career assessment test is very different than it was years ago when all you did was go with your interest and choose a field that interested you. Today, it's not only more complicated but it's much more defined. Whereas years ago, the career assessment test would focus on careers based on jobs that you were interested in, today they focus more on you as an individual. It's more apparent today that jobs need to be focused on the individual if the person is to be satisfied and happy on the job.

The career assessment tests ask a variety of questions that will help to identify certain personality traits that determine not only personal preference by skill levels and competencies. While we may think we would like a certain type of job, we may not be competent to do our very best at this career, which can lead to job dissatisfaction. Career assessment tests taking into consideration our likes, dislikes, values, talents and abilities and match us with a career that suits our interests and lifestyle. Taking a career assessment test can be very exciting. You may find things out about yourself that you never realized before.

What the Career Assessment Test Determines

The testing part of the assessment is the most important part as it is your answers that will help determine the career that will work out best for you. Too many people that take the test take too much time thinking about the questions rather than just answering from your heart. Just read the question and answer it quickly before you have a chance to really think about the answer, keeping in mind your first instinct is usually correct.

Career assessment tests will ask you a lot of questions about your likes and dislikes and while some of these questions may not seem pertinent, they'll help to decide what you would enjoy and be good at in your career. Remember, just liking a certain career field is no guarantee that you're going to be good at the job. The questions that you're asked in a career assessment test will help them learn the following things about you:

  • What your main interests are
  • What field you'll be most competent and skillful at
  • What work style you prefer
  • What your strong points are as well as your weak points
  • What you'd be better at: analytical jobs, people jobs, hands-on jobs, etc.
  • What job will best fit your education
  • What job will give you the least amount of stress
